Note: All courses assume a period of at least 45 minutes in length. When the periods are longer, more individual attention can be given to individual students. Maximum class size is 15 students. I provide my own laptop, LCD projector, and all handouts. You provide a computer lab (1 computer for each student), medium-large viewing screen that can be seen by all students. I prefer to visit you and your students prior to the residency but this will be at no additional cost to you. |
| For High School/Middle School Students and Teachers |
Introduction to Macromedia’s Dreamweaver (5 days): Students learn the basic features of Macromedia’s Dreamweaver software by actually building their own web page(s). Topics include Setting up a Site, Formatting Text in a Web page, Using the Property Inspector, Creating Internal & External Links, Creating Email Links, Adding Images to web pages, Using Tables for Creating Web sites, Introduction to Cascading Style Sheets, and Appropriate use of colors, layout and fonts. Pre-requisites: Students should be able to browse the internet successfully and operate in a Microsoft Windows environment. Prior graphic arts or related computer courses and experience are helpful. Learning Environment Requirements: Each student has own Windows computer workstation with graphics capability and with Macromedia’s Dreamweaver software (Version MX or later). Introduction to General Web site Design (3-5 days): Students learn an appreciation of good web design techniques by analyzing actual web sites and participative exercises and by learning the basics of the web design programming in HTML. This course is designed for students who don’t have the Macromedia Dreamweaver software or who haven’t had any graphic’s art background. Students will design a basic web page using HTML. Pre-requisites: Students should be able to browse the internet successfully and operate in a Microsoft Windows environment. Learning Environment Requirements: Each student has own Windows computer workstation with graphics capability. |
Using Cascading Style Sheets with Macromedia’s Dreamweaver (3 days): Students learn the basics of how to use Cascading Style Sheets to format web pages to save time and comply with web designer standards. Prerequisites: Introduction to Macromedia’s Dreamweaver course or a working knowledge of HTML in web page design. Learning Environment: Learning Environment Requirements: Each student should have his own windows computer workstation with graphics capability |
Creating a Video Production (5 days): Students learn the basics of creating a video production. Topics include: Scripting, Shooting, and Editing Techniques. This residency is one that is customized to each schools needs. The depth of involvement and hands-on training of students will depend on the availability of video camcorders and non-linear editing hardware and software at your location. One approach may be for a class to decide on a 3-5 minute movie topic and develop a rough script before I arrive. I will bring my own camcorder and editing computer to your location and while there we can go through the various stages and concepts of production while creating your actual video. Pre-requisites: At least some students are familiar with camcorder operation and some students have the ability to write creatively. Learning Environment: Provide a room large enough for students to work in groups and the ability for students to go out on campus for shooting scenes. |
For Elementary School Students (Grades 4, 5, and 6) |
Introduction to General Web site Design (3 days): Students learn an appreciation of good web design techniques by analyzing actual web sites, engaging in participative exercises and by learning the basics of the web design programming. This course is designed for students who don’t have the Macromedia Dreamweaver software or who haven’t had any extensive graphic’s art background. Students will also design a very basic web page by doing some simple exercises and then putting them together. Pre-requisites: Students should be able to operate a computer using in a Windows environment and browse the World Wide Web. Learning Environment: Each student must have an individual computer workstation capable of handling graphics and that has internet access. |
